Detroit was once a mecca for manufacturing, earning its nickname as the Motor City, but when economic downturns hit the United States, Detroit seemed to take it the hardest. Dilapidated and withered, the area began to fall into despair, seemingly unable to recoup from its hard times.
Over a decade later, Detroit is once a rising star.
While manufacturing and other industries are once again on the rise, Detroit is making a name for itself another way—as an up and coming food hub.
In the wave of Millennial transplants, Detroit has begun to see a range of eateries pop up across the Metro area. Everything from gastro pubs and distilleries to French bistros and burger bars have started to spread throughout the city-limits, most featuring locally grown ingredients.
Currently, one of the most popular options for local residents is an eatery called Dime Store. Located in the Chrysler House—also referred to as the Dime Building—the restaurant offers brunch any time of the day. Known for its outstanding service, Dime Store presents options like duck bop hash and spicy pork belly eggs benedict.
For those looking to snag a great meal that is something more than the average fast food, Wright & Co offers the perfect blend of casual and fine dining. The dining establishment calls the second floor of the Heritage Building home and offers a beautiful vintage bar for those waiting for a table.
No Millennial favorite destination is complete without a killer nightlife and Detroit does not disappoint. Cafe d’Mongo exudes an old-fashioned feel, reminiscent of the archaic speakeasies, with a focus on culture and the Hollywood themes. The establishment is only open on weekend nights, adding to its allure.
Detroit is undoubtedly on the up and up, as evidenced by the cultural revolt occurring within the city’s limits. Between the recent sweep of performing and visual arts, the citywide revitalization, and the flocks of foodies lining outside some of the city’s most popular eateries, Detroit is clearly the Comeback King.
