Huge Tax Incentives and Detroit's Bid for Amazon H2Q: What You Need to Know
The City of Detroit and the state of Michigan offered $4 billion in tax incentives to Amazon for the so-called Amazon H2Q. Michigan Economic Development Corp officials said that this by far is the biggest incentive package offered by a state to a private company. This however still failed to sway Amazon, which put Detroit into the waiting list. The list consists of 20 cities and regions awaiting to be chosen as the final winner.
According to Detroit Free Press, the said move was initialy denied by MEDC. But later on said that the state and Gilbert’s Bedrock had reached a “mutual decision” to release the details.
MEDC officials added that the package offered to Amazon was performance-based. Amazon would only get the benefits if and when it created new jobs and tax base.
The bulk of the offer consists of the 30-year Michigan Renaissance Zone tax break of $3.3 billion and property taxes for 30 years. It also include to let Amazon live corporate city income and utility tax-free for 30 years, abate real and personal property taxes for 10 years, and set the PPT rate at 1.1 percent for 20 years.

With this move by Amazon, recently Microsoft opened its office in downtown Detroit and LinkedIn announced its opening of their first U.S. office in Detroit. Certainly with Bedrock’s $2.1 billion “transformational” new developments, Detroit and Michigan’s future is so bright.
